What's guaranteed to land you the job?

There’s one thing you can do in a job interview that’s pretty much guaranteed to land you the role.
It’s leading the conversation… without being seen to.
Knowingly or unknowingly, interviewers ask each person they meet the same questions. Because everyone can do the job (hence why they were called for interview), this means that, once all the meetings are complete, interviewers have a set of broadly similar answers. So how do they choose who to hire?
By considering what else they learned about these people. And the interviewee is the person best placed to know what this should be – only they truly know their strengths and achievements.
For example: if you’re asked to describe a project you delivered in EMEA but know the most impactful one you led was in Asia, answer the question but add “of course, while it brought us huge benefit in Europe, it was nothing compared to what my project in Singapore achieved”. Or if you’re asked about your track record in securing revenue growth, provide appropriate figures but, if you also drove an impressive improvement in employee engagement, mention it.
These snippets will be too tempting for the interviewer who will surely ask about them, which gives you the opportunity to provide information which differentiates you from your competition.
Naturally, interviewers have other considerations when making their selection, principally cultural fit but, to a large degree, you’ll either fit or won’t. Making sure the interviewer learns what you want them to know, the things that sell you best, is something you can control.
But make sure you do it subtly – coming across as being pushy isn’t going to do you any favours!
