Scaling a business

It’s often said that scaling a business is harder than founding one as the once agile and innovative start-up needs to become more bureaucratic, conservative and process-driven. This can pose a number of challenges for a firm’s leadership, with senior recruitment being one.
Previously, they worked with like-minded people who thrived without structure, were happy to roll their sleeves up and shared their entrepreneurial spirit. Unsurprisingly, these people could be found through personal networks and that’s as complicated as recruitment needed to be.
But now the company requires more structure and, with it, leaders with specific skills and knowledge. Unfortunately, delivering suitable recruitment exercises in-house may well be beyond a company at this point in its development so they turn to an executive recruitment consultancy.
However, care should be taken that the chosen consultancy truly recognises and understands the needs of a scaling business. For example, this not only means that matters such as the cultural fit of the people presented will be of the highest importance but that the consultancy itself will need to be adaptable and able to offer support, guidance and added value at all stages.
And, of course, the commercial terms offered by a recruitment partner will be of consequence – after all, unless they have significant financial backing, a young firm’s pockets are typically not deep.
Growing businesses need to make many decisions that have potential make-or-break implications. It is no overstatement to say that selecting the right executive recruitment partner is one of them.
